Because your glam shouldn't melt — even when the temperature does.
If you live in Jamaica, you already know the struggle. You spend 45 minutes perfecting your look, step outside, and within the hour your foundation has slid south, your mascara has made a run for it, and your lipstick has all but disappeared. Sound familiar?
The truth is, summer makeup in the Caribbean requires a completely different approach to what you might see on international beauty blogs. Our heat, our humidity, and the intensity of our sun demand products and techniques that are specifically suited to our climate — and our skin.
At Face Forward Jamaica, we've been doing makeup in this heat for years. We know exactly what works, what doesn't, and how to keep you looking flawless from morning to midnight. Here are our top tips for summer-proof makeup that lasts.
1. Skincare Is Your Foundation (Literally)
Before a single product touches your face, your skin prep makes or breaks everything. In summer, this matters even more.
- Hydrate, but choose wisely. Opt for a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser. Heavier creams sit on top of the skin and cause makeup to slip in humidity. Look for gel-based formulas that absorb quickly.
- Never skip SPF. Jamaica's UV index regularly hits 11+ in summer — that's 'extreme' on the scale. Use a mattifying SPF 30–50 under your makeup. Many formulas double as a primer.
- Use a toner or facial mist first. A hydrating toner creates a base that helps makeup bond better to the skin. Spritz, pat gently, and let it absorb before applying anything else.
- Let your skincare settle. Give your moisturiser and SPF at least 5 minutes to fully absorb before applying makeup. Rushing this step is the number one reason makeup slides off.
2. Prime Like Your Look Depends On It (Because It Does)
In Jamaican heat, primer isn't optional — it's essential. A good primer creates a barrier between your skin and your foundation, significantly extending wear time.
- Choose a silicone-based or pore-minimising primer for oily or combination skin — these create a smooth, matte canvas that grips foundation.
- For dry skin types, a hydrating primer works best. Look for formulas with glycerin or hyaluronic acid.
- Apply primer to the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with extra care — these areas produce the most oil and are the first to break down.
- Allow primer to dry for 60–90 seconds before applying foundation. It should feel slightly tacky, not wet.
💡 Face Forward Tip: In extreme heat, apply a mattifying primer AND a setting powder to your T-zone before foundation. This 'double mattify' technique is a game-changer for all-day wear.
3. Choose the Right Foundation Formula
Not all foundations are created equal — and this is especially true in our climate. Here's what to look for:
- Long-wear or transfer-proof formulas. These are engineered to stay put through heat and humidity. Look for terms like 'long-lasting', '24-hour wear', 'waterproof', or 'humidity-resistant' on the label.
- Medium to full coverage in lightweight formulas. Heavy, thick foundations melt faster. Choose buildable, lightweight formulas that give coverage without weighing down the skin.
- Matte or satin finishes for oily skin. Dewy or luminous finishes can look beautiful but amplify shine in heat. Save these for air-conditioned events; opt for matte outdoors.
- Avoid oil-based or cream foundations in peak heat. These melt significantly faster in humidity. Save them for cooler months or indoor-only events.

4. Set, Set, Set — Then Set Again
Setting your makeup is non-negotiable in summer, but the how matters just as much as the weather.
Step 1: Set with Loose Powder
After applying concealer under the eyes and on any areas that tend to crease, apply a small amount of loose setting Powder in a press and place motion. This technique is particularly effective in humidity.
Step 2: Press, Don't Rub
Use a damp beauty sponge to press powder into the skin rather than a brush sweeping it on. Pressing bonds the powder to the foundation more effectively.
Step 3: Lock it with Setting Spray
This is the step most people skip — and it shows. A good setting spray acts like a finishing sealant over everything. Spritz in an X and T pattern, hold 8–10 inches from your face, and allow to air dry. Do not fan your face — let it dry naturally.
⭐ Pro Secret: Layer your setting spray. After your full makeup is done, set with powder, then setting spray, then a light dusting of powder, then one final spritz of setting spray. This two-layer technique dramatically extends wear time in humidity.
5. Waterproof Everything Below the Eyes
Jamaica's summer means spontaneous rain showers, beach days, sweat, and humidity — sometimes all in the same afternoon. Protect your eye makeup at all costs.
- Use a waterproof eyeliner — pencil or liquid, both should be specifically labelled waterproof.
- Waterproof mascara is non-negotiable from June through September. Apply in thin layers and allow each coat to dry before adding the next.
- Apply an eyeshadow primer before any eye colour. This prevents creasing and colour transfer, even in extreme humidity.
- For eyeshadow, cream-based formulas in summer tend to crease. Powder eyeshadows applied over a good primer perform better in heat.
- A waterproof brow gel or tinted brow pomade will keep your brows defined all day without smudging.
6. Lips That Last
Lip colour fading is one of the most common summer makeup complaints. Here's how to make it stick:
- Lip liner is your best friend. Outline and fill in your entire lip with a matching lip liner before applying your lipstick. This gives the colour something to grip onto and significantly extends wear.
- Choose long-wear or matte formulas. Liquid matte lipsticks and long-wear lip colours outperform glossy or satin formulas in heat. They set on the lips and resist fading, eating, and drinking much better.
- Blot and reapply. After applying lipstick, place a tissue over your lips and lightly dust translucent powder through the tissue. This sets the colour. Reapply a second thin layer of lipstick on top for extra longevity.
7. Touch-Up Like a Pro
Even the best-applied makeup needs a refresh during a long day in Jamaican heat. Here's how to do it without making things worse:
- Blot — never rub — oil away with blotting papers or a clean tissue before adding any powder.
- Use a pressed powder compact to lightly mattify the T-zone. A large fluffy brush deposits too much product and looks cakey; use a small flat puff instead.
- Carry a travel-size setting spray for midday touch-ups. A quick spritz revives makeup without adding layers.
- For lipstick touch-ups, blot first, reapply liner, then lipstick for a fresh, clean result.
- Avoid using your fingers to touch your face — the oils on your hands accelerate makeup breakdown.
8. Skincare After the Heat
What you do after a day in the Jamaican sun is just as important as your morning routine. Heavy sweating, sun exposure, and makeup wear all stress the skin.
- Double cleanse at the end of the day: an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve makeup and SPF, followed by your prescribed cleanser to clean the skin.
- Use a soothing toner or essence to restore the skin's pH after cleansing.
- Apply a lightweight overnight moisturiser or treatment serum to support the skin's repair process overnight.
- Drink plenty of water — hydration from within is the foundation of glowing skin.
